I am using WhatsApp web on my laptop and noticed whilst browsing through my history that the entry appears as "(2)WhatsApp.web".

What does the (2) mean?

I'm guessing here, but: Some websites modify the title of the page to show new notifications. This appears on the tab while you're browsing, and it may also get recorded in your history instead of the original page title.

That's a good shout buddy, I think you might be right. Thanks!

That's not a FF program so unless Whatsapp can explain that to you that would mean you probably open two pages of it or opened it twice. But since there is not screenshot of the history it's anyone guess what that means.

I thought it more likely to be a function of FF.

However I suppose if two instances were opened on seperate tabs it may have been that, though I have some tried to replicate it and failed.
