At one point firefox asked if I wanted to return to a prior web page upon opening, and I checked "yes," but I want to change that so it just opens to Google.

Open the Options window (in the tools menu select Options). Go to the General panel and in the Startup section change the setting "When Firefox starts" to "Shown my home page" and make sure the Home Page in the box just below is set to Google. If you click on the "Restore to Default" button the home page will be set to a Firefox branded Google search page.

If you want to be asked again then you can reset the warn prefs on the about:config page via the right-click context menu.

To open the about:config page, type about:config in the location (address) bar and press the "Enter" key, just like you type the url of a website to open a website.
If you see a warning then you can confirm that you want to access that page.
