Change Thunderbird's synchronization settings to limit the number of messages that are synchronised for offline access. Those settings are explained here IMAP Synchronization. You can configure Tbird to NOT keep any offline messages since the messages are stored on the server. This way, only headers for the messages are fetched and the rest of the message (body) is downloaded only when that message is opened in the client.
