I want to manually add a sub-folder from an earlier TB install to my current TB Local Folder?

I have a new TB install. I made a Temp.sbd in my existing "Local Folders" looking exactly like the others. I filled it with a tree of (I guess mbox) files from my earlier TB install. This tree has only a few mail folders (plus * .msf) and a few whatever.sbd etc. When I open TB I expected it to see these files, but it does not. What else do I need to do to get TB to see these files that it should already be able to read?

My intention is to move the individual emails out of this tree and into the new tree then delete the Temp.sbd I made when done.

What is the technical format of a Local Folders mbox? Or where in the profiles data is it told what *.sbd and *.msf files to "see" when it loads the Local Folders data?

I through this would be easy, but it is not.

Thanks for explaining the inner workings that are eluding me.

There is one other annoying thing. It keeps asking if I want to set TB as the default for email newgroups etc. and keeps asking even though I tell yes every time. Do I need to set this in Windows because TB is unable to make changes to the Windows 10 OS? This is a new PC for my son. If this is too far off topic, just point me in the right direction.

I would go about this by creating the Temp folder in Thunderbird. Then it would create the sbd file and deal with all the dependences and other niceties.

Once this file/folder exists, you can close Thunderbird and copy your older material into it using your file manager.

Note that the mbox files don't have an extension, and you don't really need their accompanying .msf file. So for each msf file, you need to find its partner of the same name.

Thank you. That did it.

In short, I think I learned that the Temp.sbd I created was incorrect because there was no Temp and Temp.msf. I needed to make a Temp folder inside TB (like you said) and then a sub-folder to this (that I called OLD) to make TB create the Temp.sbd directory. Then after I closed TB I was able to copy my entire set of old mbox files (about 12 folders and various sub-folders) into this Temp.sbd directory. When I opened TB again all the sub-folders I wanted were parallel to the OLD folder I created.

Thank you for your help with this. Very much appreciated!
