After TB updated to 31.3 yesterday, it stopped downloading email automatically on startup. I only have one email account in Thunderbird, and it is a POP. I also have RSS feeds, and those do not automatically download either. I have checked the account settings to be sure they are set to download on startup. I had to disable the FolderPane add on I had in order to get my inbox to display as the home screen and to get my calendar (lightening) to stay open all the time. I don't know what I had FolderPane doing for me, but perhaps that is involved in the problem. I know that I did something at one point to get the RSS feeds to display at the top of the left folder pane, rather than at the bottom, and as I recall there was some problem with getting the inbox to automatically download at that time. Perhaps Folderpane was solving that problem. I have made no other changes to my computer. I am using Windows 7. I tried restarting. I tried reverting to TB 31, but that did not solve the problem. However, I did not try reverting to 31 and then enabling Folderpane again. That might work, but I'd really rather not have to block all updates.

does mail download if you press Shift +F5

I'm sorry, I wasn't clear about this... Mail will download just fine when I push the button to check for messages or after the program has been open for the 10 minute interval I have set for checking for mail. It just does not download mail when the program is launched.

I tried reverting to 31.0, but that did not solve the problem. I tried to re-enable Folderpane in 31.0, but then TB stopped saving my home screen again, just as it started doing after it updated to 31.3. I tried to go back to an older version than that, but then my calendar would not work at all.

So I am back to 31.3 with everything working except that my email will not download automatically when I first launch TB.

When Thunderbird starts does mail download when you press Shift+F5?

If yes, try disabling your anti v irus mail scanning component and see if it is it that is having a cow.

If I press shift + F5 after opening TB, the email will download, same as when I click on "get messages." If I press shift + F5 while launching TB, it opens in safe mode, but it does not download email unless I again press shift + F5 or the "get messages" button. I tried disabling the email scanning portion of my security software and then launched TB, but the messages still did not download.

I pulled up my server settings again in TB to again make sure check for new messages at startup is checked, which it is, but I noticed something that made me wonder. In the left window, I have three sections: Blogs & News Feeds with one subfolder: disk Space, my email address with 7 subfolders: Server Settings, Copies & Folders, etc., and Local Folders with two subfolders: Junk Settings and Disk Space. I don't know if my email address and subfolders should be under Local Folders, since it is a POP account, or if that could be related to my problem. However, this is not a change, and it's been working fine, until TB updated and I had to disable Folderpane.

I am at a bit of a loss... Safe mode should work if it is an add-on or theme.

Perhaps if we try Windows safe mode. *then you don't need to try to disable security stuff that which would interfere is disabled.

Restart the operating system in safe mode with Networking. This loads only the very basics needed to start your computer while enabling an Internet connection. Click on your operating system for instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows Vista, Windows XP, OSX

Good idea, but sadly it did not work. Even in safe mode, the messages did not download on launch. I also tried turning off all unnecessary programs and services with a regular start-up, and that didn't work either. For some reason, I think it is related to that folderpane plugin in that I had to disable with this update. This is the only change I have noticed since disabling that plugin. I wish I could remember what I installed that plug in to do. I think it was to get the RSS feeds to the top of the folder pane, but I think when I did that at the time, I had trouble getting my inbox to download, and I may have installed folderpane to resolve that issue. Right now the RSS feeds folders are first in both the account settings and the folder panes, and that's where I want them in the folder pane.

And one other note related to my last note about the accounts. Although my email address does not show under Local Folders in the account settings screen, my inbox for that email address is a subfolder of Local Folders in the regular folder pane.
