If I right click (control-click on mac) to customize, there is nothing to drag to the toolbar to re-populate it. I dragged the dark star on the white rectangle but it had no effect. (Not sure what that icon is supposed to do.)

The only way I can see the toolbar bookmarks is to put them in a sidebar, which takes up an inordinate amount of space.

I didn't see your new thread before replying to your other post. Here were my suggestions:

Any luck?

Since neither of those ideas work, is Firefox irreparably broken or is there anything else to try?

Sometimes the file that stores toolbar customizations becomes corrupted. You can rename the file and customize from scratch.

Open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using

Help > Troubleshooting Information > "Open in Finder" button

Leaving that Finder window open, switch back to Firefox and Quit

Pause while Firefox finishes its cleanup, then rename localstore.rdf to something like localstore.old

Restart Firefox. Things should be back to the default layout.

I did what you asked but there is no change. The only possible glitch is that I'm not sure what you mean by cleanup, or how long I have to wait for it to be done.

Can you attach a screenshot of the user interface with the Customize window open?

Use a compressed image type like PNG or JPG to save the screenshot.

If "Bookmarks Toolbar items" is not on the Bookmarks Toolbar and also not in the toolbar palette then click the "Restore Default Set" button to restore the default toolbar setup.

  • Firefox menu button > Options > Toolbar Layout
  • View > Toolbars > Customize

You did t\find the Firefox profile folder?

I've attached 3 screenshots here: My entire desktop, including menu bar, and 2 images of the customize window, since you can't see all icons in one image.

I've tried hitting the "reset" button to no effect. I appreciate all the help. It seems that my issue is unique and not amenable to a quick fix.

I don't know what the "Firefox menu button" is. What does it look like and where is it found?

And how about "clean up?" I never got an answer (from the other guy, I assume you are guys) about how long to wait for clean up or how to know that it's done.

Hi sheilakc, I'm in Pacific time, and didn't see your message from last night until just now.

The Firefox menu button is a feature on Windows. The second approach was the one you use on Mac.

You mentioned the Reset button. Do you mean the "Restore Default Set" button in that Customize dialog?

After clicking Restore Default Set, is the Adblock Plus button still on the gray bar above the Navigation Toolbar?

With respect to localstore.rdf, Firefox may require several seconds or sometimes as long as a minute to finish updating files. You will see many of the timestamps on the files update suddenly, which is how I generally judge that the updates are finished.

MacOS does have some different files than Windows for the user interface; I'm not very familiar with those, so if Restore Default Set and/or renaming localstore.rdf do not return your toolbar area to the original defaults, you may need that extra Mac knowledge (from cor-el or someone else).

Some extensions can mess up your toolbar area, for example, some have been known to evict or hide other buttons or rearrange them. Other than Adblock Plus, do you have any extensions installed? You can extract a list from this page:

Help > Troubleshooting Information

In the upper left corner, click the "Copy text to clipboard" button. Then you can paste the details into a reply post, and delete the lower part starting from "Important Modified Preferences" (I don't think those are relevant to this problem).

YES. EXACT NAME WAS NOT VISIBLE WHEN I WAS TYPING.

After clicking Restore Default Set, is the Adblock Plus button still on the gray bar above the Navigation Toolbar?

YES, RESTORE DEFAULT SET BUTTON REMOVES EVERYTHING FROM TOOLBAR.

I NOW HAVE NO EXTENSIONS OTHER THAN AD BLOCK PLUS. I REMOVED "ROOMY BOOKMARKS" TO SEE IF IT WOULD HELP AND ADDED A NEW EXTENSION ABOUT SORTING BOOKMARKS, BUT HAVE NOW REMOVED THAT ONE ALSO. WHILE PLAYING AROUND WITH THESE EXTENSIONS, MY BOOKMARKS BRIEFLY REAPPEARED! NOT SURE WHAT I DID TO MAKE THAT HAPPEN, BUT THEY ARE NOW GONE AGAIN. : (

Edit: My bookmarks didn't reappear in the format I'm used to, ie, icons only, so I went back into roomy bookmarks to try to change that and then the bookmarks disappeared entirely again. But now do not have roomy bookmarks on at all and still no bookmarks.

Sorry about the all caps above, I didn't see that there are formatting options to differentiate my response from yours.

Try to remove the Firefox plist file (org.mozilla.firefox.plist).

Go to "~/Library/Preferences" and remove the plist file for Firefox (org.mozilla.firefox.plist)

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder where the localstore.rdf file is located:

I can't tell I'm supposed to do both of these things or do one or the other?

Also, I renamed localstore.rdf with localstore.old last night, no effect. Are you saying to do it again?

You can try both suggestions and first delete the Firefox plist file to see if that has effect.

The second suggestion is about the localstore.rdf file that I had mentioned before.

There is nothing called "preferences" in library. There is something called "preferencepanes" but it does not contain a mozilla file. See screenshot.

I also used Spotlight to search for firefox.plist, no results other than your emails. See screenshot.

Note, I have uploaded the screenshot of my spotlight search twice. It shows up when I go to update my answer, but not in the public version. I've just taken a screenshot of the "update answer" page to show that the screenshots are attached in that view.

There are two Library folders.
The one that you need is in your user account: /Users/<user>/Library/

In Mac OS X v10.7 and later, the ~/Library folder is a hidden folder.

I found it, trying now.

Is there another browser you can recommend? Firefox is too difficult.

It appears that the problem is the roomy bookmarks extension. I have added and deleted this extension several time and every time I add it my bookmarks disappear again. Perhaps Mozilla should delete roomy bookmarks from the library of addons until the developer fixes the problem.

My bookmarks are not the way they were, there is now room for only 14 in the toolbar whereas before this I had about 80 (icons only.) Is there any way to go back to icons only without using roomy bookmarks? Having only 14 bookmarks doesn't help me much, I use dozens on an average day. I've attached a screenshot of how my bookmarks toolbar looks now.

You can hide the text of bookmarks on the Bookmarks Toolbar with code in the userChrome.css file.

Add code to the userChrome.css file below the default @namespace line.

@namespace url("http://www.mozilla.org/keymaster/gatekeeper/there.is.only.xul"); /* only needed once */

#personal-bookmarks .bookmark-item > .toolbarbutton-text { display:none !important; }

/* use this to adjust the margins if necessary*/
#personal-bookmarks .bookmark-item > .toolbarbutton-icon { margin:0px !important; padding:0px !important; }

The customization files userChrome.css (user interface) and userContent.css (websites) are located in the chrome folder in the Firefox profile folder.

The userChrome.css file is a plain text file, so make sure to save the file without using any formatting like the rich text format does.

You can use this button to go to the Firefox profile folder:

  • Help > Troubleshooting Information > Profile Directory: Show Folder (Linux: Open Directory; Mac: Show in Finder)

I may try that later when I have more time.

Just curious if others have had trouble with roomy bookmarks? I've used this add on for years without issue so don't know what is going on with it now.

The only thing that changed to bring on this problem yesterday was shutting down my computer overnight. It had been weeks since I'd restarted and Safari was running slow (I use it for the NY Times only, cookies off so I don't need to subscribe) and thought a restart might help. Left it off overnight and when I turned it back on, no more bookmarks.

There is a comment on the Add-on page of the Roomy Bookmarks Toolbar:
