Why can't I save a bookmark for a particular site in multiple locations? If I already have it saved, for instance, in the bookmarks menu, and I then try to save an additional copy into the bookmarks folder, the copy in the bookmarks menu will disappear. This is incredibly frustrating. Thanks.

You can make a copy of a bookmark if you want it to appear in more than one folder.

Using the "star" at the right end of the Location bar, you can only save to one location.

Using the Bookmark Sidebar (CTRL+B opens and closes the Bookmarks Sidebar), you can drag the icon at the left end of the Location Bar to other locations, one at a time, into a folder (will be placed at the bottom of the items already in the folder) or into any position, including a position within a folder. The image below demonstrates; the image is old, but the method still works. This is the only method that I use for Bookmarking, as I place some Bookmarks in multiple folders and I keep the Bookmarks Sidebar open most of the time for easier access.

Not related to your question, but...

You need to update some plug-ins:

I agree, this is really, really irritating, especially since I didn't catch on to the change in behavior right away, and lost bookmarks when I deleted them from a secondary folder, thinking they were already saved in the primary folder. NOT OK!!! Have tried to get some help for this in FireFox chat and have been blown off - people who save their bookmarks differently think it's trivial. However, the bookmark side bar and copy and paste methods are a LOT more time consuming, and I think it's outrageously highhanded that FireFox erases ANY bookmark automatically. Hope this is fixed really soon. (BTW, XP Pro, FF vs. 9.0.1 and 10.0.1)

@oranji,

The "smart" bookmarks folders, blue (on WinXP) with a magnifier image, aren't regular bookmarks folders - delete a bookmark from one of those 3 folders and the actual bookmark will also be deleted from where it is stored.

That "not saving duplicate bookmarks" feature has been part of Firefox for a number of years now, it came about when the Tags feature was added to bookmarks back in the Firefox 3.0 version in June 2008. I highly doubt if that is going to be changed after being part of Firefox for almost 4 years now. Firefox is the way Firefox is, you have learn how it works and adapt to it - unless you are capable of hacking Firefox code or creating an add-on to change the way something in Firefox works.

I don't use Tags myself, and sometimes I want to add the same bookmark to two separate folders. The way I do that is to drag the website icon from the left side of the URL into the folder I want the new bookmark saved in, and repeat for the 2nd folder. I usually do that "drag + drop" into the Bookmarks Sidebar, but it works for the Bookmarks Menu Bar item / drop-down and I suppose for the Bookmarks button on the Bookmarks Toolbar (not 100% sure though, as I don't use the BTB).

A). Not talking about the "smart" bookmarks folders

B). I was able to save the same bookmark to multiple folders using the bookmark dialog within recent memory (and my memory isn't that good), so your assertion that this feature has been unavailable since 2008 is incorrect. It was most certainly available in 2011.

C). I have already stated that the workarounds you mention are unacceptable. They are clumsy, and more to the point, I should not have to use workarounds to keep bookmarks from being deleted from where I have chosen to put them.

D). What a bizarre take on FF development (adapt to it, don't expect it to adapt to you). It's open source, dude. If everyone felt that way, nothing new would ever be added.

B) If that had worked until recently, you may have had an add-on installed which is now disabled or gone, that added that feature to Firefox.

D) I was referring to changes in the program, not the addition of new features. If you can't adapt to change, find a "retro" add-on to make something work the way it used to work or fix it yourself. Everyone had access to the Firefox source code.
