Firefox has not opened an opml file on my desktop so I can't import my live bookmarks to another rss reader.

I think the file should be named

Firefox feeds backup.opml

Do you have any files that start with a similar name?

Could you make a safe copy of your bookmark backup files. I'll be back with a suggestion on how to extract the RSS feed list from the file (I have to do some testing first).

(1) To open your profile folder...

You can open your current Firefox settings (AKA Firefox profile) folder using either

  • "3-bar" menu button > "?" Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • (menu bar) Help > Troubleshooting Information
  • type or paste about:support in the address bar and press Enter

In the first table on the page, click the "Open Folder" (or "Show in Finder") button.

(2) Copy out bookmark backup files

Firefox creates daily (more or less) backups of your bookmarks. However, older ones are cycled out so as time passes, the possibility of mining older files for feeds will disappear.

Double-click into the bookmarkbackups folder. Save all pre-update files to a safe location such as your Documents folder.

(3) Converting a Backup to an HTML ("export") format

I have a page that opens these compressed files and allows converting to HTML. Currently, it doesn't pay special attention to RSS feeds but I'm going to try to add that now. It will be at:

Okay, the new version is available. If you already viewed the page, reload bypassing the cache using Ctrl+Shift+r. If not:

https://www.jeffersonscher.com/ffu/bookbackreader.html

After dropping an older bookmark backup on the white box in the page, scroll to the bottom to extract the feeds. Let me know how it works for you.

Do you mean you don't see the shortcut?
