What the actual fuck is this. I had disabled firefox updates, i had an old version with 500 bookmarks and history from since i installed my firefox years ago, i even coppied it from my old PC. Havent updated a single fucking thing for years. And now, out of thin air. I open my firefox, and its a brand fucking spanking new firefox, the only problem - Everything is gone. Why in the fucking world would this happen? Because im really pissed.

Do you have an "Old Firefox Data" folder on the desktop in case the Refresh feature in Firefox has been used and a new profile has been created?

You can copy files like these to the current Firefox profile folder to recover specific data.

  • bookmarks and history: places.sqlite
  • bookmark backups: JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder
  • SQLite files like cookies.sqlite (cookies) and formhistory.sqlite (saved form data)
  • logins.json and key3.db (decryption key) for Passwords saved in the Password Manager
  • cert8.db and possibly cert_override.txt for (intermediate) certificates stored in the Certificate Manager
  • persdict.dat for words you added to the spelling checker dictionary
  • permissions.sqlite for Permissions and possibly content-prefs.sqlite for other Site Preferences
  • sessionstore.js for open tabs and pinned tabs and tab groups

You can use this button to go to the current Firefox profile folder:

The folder is there, yes, but its empty, well, it's not completely empty, it just lacks any of the files that actually mean anything, the history, add-ons and settings

Managed to find my old backup i did from my old PC back in september 2016. I guess its not bad, but must say, without my backup, all of my stuff would of been lost, the Old firefox feature was useless. Looks something like my old firefox, so thanks for the reply anyways -

Did you check whether the old profile is still in the default location in AppData\Roaming?

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Firefox uses two locations for the Firefox profile folder, so make sure to look in the correct location. Location used for the main profile in "AppData\Roaming" that keeps your personal data.

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

Location used for the disk cache and other temporary files in "AppData\Local".

  • C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\<profile>\

The old profile weights only 400 mb less than it should. Despite that, i did try launching the good ol fox using that profile, and behold, it was empty, as expected. I already salvaged what i could. The only real question, why did it happen and why didnt the old profile work as it was supposed to, saving my data? Im certain that i had every update sent to hell. I sure ass hell didnt manually download any updates. What could of caused this? Could of something changed my firefox settings, if i remember correctly , update asap is the default setting. Last thing i was doing was defragmenting my hdd and checking smart scan logs for errors, because my hdd is running slower than it should. Deleted some malware... That could be it... I remember among the files, some were in mozilla folders. Could of /Malwarebytes Anti-Malware/ flagged something as false positive and deleting them somehow made my firefox update itself upon launch. Even if it did, the Old firefox data should of been there. Ohh well, i guess theres no point in lossing sleep over this for both of us, as i salvaged the truly important stuff non-the less.
