Hello Susan.
I think you may be referring to Flash game, instead of Java. In any case, please make sure your plugins are all up to date, including Java and Flash. Simply go into Tools > Add-ons > Plugins and click the update button. You will be lead to a page in the Mozilla site that will help you through the process. Hopefully.
If you have doubts, feel free to ask here.
runescape is java
After updating all the extensions and plugins as Morbus recommended, I solved this problem by
1. disable all extensions in the Tools->Add-ons
2. disable all plugins in the Tools->Add-ons
3. restart firefox
4. navigate to java.com and click the Download button. It is a java applet and used to crash my browser. Once I disabled everything, this button did not crash the browser.
5. Install the update. I was already up to date, but I had the old one replaced.
6. restart firefox
7. java apps now work
8. I enabled extensions and plugins one at a time; restarted firefox; tested a java applet; all worked
9. Life is good.
