Recover Firefox Account/Sync password without losing stored data
Hello,
I've accidentally deleted all my saved passwords in Firefox. Recovering key3.db and logins.json didn't really help, maybe they were overwritten more then once, I don't really know, tried everything I could find on Internet, no success. Last chance is getting the passwords from Firefox Account/Sync, which I once set and left as is, but unfortunately I can't remember the password for the Sync account, and resetting the password would reset all the stored passwords according to warning at https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/ive-lost-my-firefox-sync-account-information I can provide any information required to confirm my identity, if needed, I need that Sync account password.
Thank in advance for your help.

Unfortunately you can't recover the password, you either know it and enter it when prompted and can get access to your personal data or you reset the password if you can't remember it and lose all personal data stored on the Sync server. Your personal data is encrypted locally with an encryption key derived from this password before it is uploaded to the Sync server and this encrypted data can only be decrypted when the sync key is derived from this specific password. Therefor you should always make sure that you do not forget this password.
If you didn't check system restore points for copies of your passwords (the two files you mentioned), you could try that:
- First set Windows to show hidden files and folders: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/14201/windows-show-hidden-files
- Then grab this utility and start poking into restore points using your regular profile folder path: http://nicbedford.co.uk/software/systemrestoreexplorer/
I suggest anything useful you find you copy out to a neutral location such as your Documents folder rather than restoring it back to its original location (especially if Firefox is still running).
Thank you all for your help, tried your suggestions already. Was afraid nothing could be done, so no news. Thanks anyway
