Firefox doesn't close properly. When running, search bar does not work and download window doesn't show current downloads. Occasionally bookmarks do not load.

I have tried completely removing all instances of firefox and reinstalling. I have even tried downgrading to 3.6. I am not sure what the problem is. Firefox always displays a message that it was not shut down properly when I open it. I can type into the search bar, but cannot "enter" the information. When I am downloading something, the download window is blank, although the item does download. Occasionally when I start Firefox, my bookmarks and toolbar does not load. It is completely blank. This started after I upgraded to 4.0. No crash report information given.

AVG Safe Search blocks use of the Enter key to load URLs you type in the location bar. If you have it installed, disable it by clicking the Firefox button, go to Add-ons, then Extensions. You should be able to find it in there.

The places.sqlite file may also be corrupted or locked. See http://kb.mozillazine.org/Locked_or_damaged_places.sqlite

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

See:

There may be extensions and plugins installed by default in a new profile, so check that in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions & Plugins" in case there are still problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

A new profile works, but only temporarily. I have tried deleting the places.sqlite information. I even took the liberty of uninstalling and deleting any of the firefox data that I can find in the profile folder and the windows application settings.
