I'm hoping to import bookmarks from my previous downloads folder

I couldn't boot my puder into Windows yesterday so had to run Samsung Complete Recovery in the end. I wasn't sure how to save my Firefox info but noticed in options that bookmarks are saved somewhere in the downloads folder. So I made a copy of the whole folder since I couldn't see a file or anything that included the words firefox, mozilla or bookmarks. Hoping that somehow I would be able to retrieve them! Now I have Windows up and running again but it's a ghost copy from December 2013. So is there a file in my downloads folder that I can open to restore my current bookmarks from a couple of days ago? Man that's a whole year gone otherwise! Thanks

Nope, not in the Downloads folder.

But maybe you saw some Import and Backup bookmarks menu items for bookmarks in the Library window where Bookmarks / History / Downloads are displayed, but the actual bookmarks are saved in the Profile folder in the places/sqlite file. And the /bookmarkbackups/ folder in the Profile folder contains your bookmark backups files - in JSON file format.

Your Profile is located here: C:\Users\user\AppData\Roaming\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\profile_name

Unless that Samsung Complete Recovery operation created some type of Windows.old folder, your Profile folder was probably overwritten during that Recovery operation and the old Profile folder won't appear. In such case, you may try using a recovery program like Recuva to try to recover your places.sqlite file or one of the JSON backup files.

Oh dear. I should have waited til the monrning to run recovery but by that time I'd had enough. Thanks for the advice. My documents were all saved in tact because I keep them in the D drive but there is no 'App Data' folder anywhere either on the C or D drives in user.

No there's no folder containing anything from before the recovery/format. So I take I'm looking to recover something called 'sqlite' which contains .json files.

I've run Recuva but it only seems to recover deleted files. Samsung Complete Recovery probably formats the hard drive which is why it only restores the saved ghost of the C drive. Anyway, no luck using that program.

Hi, If I may put in my 2 cents........ It does not however "cure" your current problem, but may help you in the future........ Try the FEBE add-on. I have used it since I got this computer (about a year) and a few times I've had to unstall/re-install Firefox and then been able to restore bookmarks, themes etc...

Well, that was my 2 cents........

OK I'll look into it. Thanks. It seems that I have the same probem with Thunderbird. By making a copy of the whole Thunderbird folder I thought I'd be saving the folders and saved messages but apparently it's more complicated than that so I've lost all the emails I saved during the past 18 months as well!

Another 2 cents ;-) There is a add-on for Thunderbird from the same "maker" called "TEBE". This is however a beta and I haven't tried it yet......

Again, it won't restore your lost 18 months, but may come in handy in the future..............

oooops........ forgot to tell you that you need to visit the "maker's" website to find TEBE.

Thanks. I have made a note in my notebook now to figure out how to do this properly next time. I've done it once before. Somehow I thought that Samsung Recovery would save the programs. It was late though so I didn't think it through enough. Perhaps the Favorites folder was the only good thing about the old IE! lol

I'm back. My laptop died soon after these exchanges and then my replacement caused a lot of trouble so I'm only just up and running again now. I've had no emails for a month. I have a fresh install of Thunderbird but it's changed from what I had before so I can't even load the contacts and saved messages from a few years ago. The only option appears to be to import from another program not from the saved Thunderbird files. What's that all about? I've done this before and it was a fast and smooth operation. How does this work now? Cheers

Hi Antraeus

Best would be to ask a new question under the Thunderbird component since you new problem is with that application and not with Firefox.

OK no worries I'll do that. Thanks
