Please state what version of Thunderbird. There are a few other similar questions - see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/1347024. Perhaps those solutions will help. Once you do have Thunderbird open - do you have 9 tabs/ emails opening? Try closing some down and then close Thunderbird. See if the number of popups changes. Please report results.
Hi
Thanks for the response. I'm using version 91.4.0 (64-bit)
Those answers look hopeful, but I can't find the settings that they are referring to.

Hi So - did you see any correlation between the 9 pop-ups and 9 of anything opening in Thunderbird? Calendar, news feed, email tabs? Digging after the config settings is not for the faint of heart. Matt, a very smart person who moderates and answers here made a tweak long ago - which people have followed over the years. It's possible your system has that tweak. This seems to be what those other answers are referring to: https://thunderbirdtweaks.blogspot.com/2013/12/windows-contacts.html and changing certain specific settings. Changing those back to normal seems to have helped other people. However I can't be sure that will help you, especially if those settings are already at default. So do copy the whole profile to a safe place first, as a backup in case config edits cause worse trouble. Here is an article about using the config editor. https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/config-editor
Hi
Thanks for the response. I couldn't find "idap" lines until I clicked the box that said "show only modified" and I noticed that there are a lot of lines that seem to relate to the school where I'm a governor, mainly they seem to relate to contacts, and calendar entries. They don't show up on my Thunderbird anyway (I can't get MS Exchange accounts to work) so I'll probably delete all those lines. It's odd that they never caused problems until recently, but must have been on there for ages.
Thanks for your help.
John
Well yes those settings may well be related to corporate setup. Let us know if deleting (after saving your profile) fixes the problem! Ability to use Exchange from Tbird has changed over the years as both systems evolved and security increased. Depends on what the school's setup allows. However, look up OWL for Tbird and Exquilla for Tbird - both paid addons intended to connect Tbird to Exchange servers.
Hi
Just to report back. I deleted all of the idap2 entries relating to the Exchange account that I can't see on Thunderbird anyway, and that has cured it.
Thanks for your help :-)
John
Thanks for letting us know that was successful! Agnes
