deactivated addons also. See above. On win7. IE and google earth run normal. Gave up, using IE for a month. On a different PC so website is reading the wrong plugins.

Chosen solution

Boot the computer in Windows Safe Mode with network support (press F8 on the boot screen) as a test to see if that helps.

It is possible that your security software (firewall, anti-virus) blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.

Remove all rules for Firefox and the plugin-container from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

It got reactivated when I reinstalled, unchecked it again. Text loads normal but any images are slow. Tried a home page of a TV station, gave up after 2 minutes.

I can't figure how to turn off the firewall for just firefox so I turned off the whole thing. The plugins got reactivated when I reinstalled firefox so I turned them all off again. Still takes 2.5 minutes to load a home page form a TV station.

Booting the computer in safe mode is the only way it runs normal speed (opening statement). HOw can I use that to track down the problem?

I finally went back a month and pull out a restore point. I was putting that off as a last resort and it's fixed for now. Thanks everyone for the tips.
