Salon.com social media links (e.g., Twitter) do not work in Firefox 17.0.1 on Windows 7 (with all add-ons disabled). Counts are blank and links do not work. (They do work in Chrome and Internet Explorer.) Example: http://www.salon.com/2012/12/14/the_nra_is_the_enabler_of_mass_murderers/

Many site issues can be caused by corrupt cookies or cache. In order to try to fix these problems, the first step is to clear both cookies and the cache. Note: This will temporarily log you out of all sites you're logged in to. To clear cache and cookies do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > History > Clear recent history or (if no Firefox button is shown) go to Tools > Clear recent history.
  2. Under "Time range to clear", select "Everything".
  3. Now, click the arrow next to Details to toggle the Details list active.
  4. From the details list, check Cache and Cookies and uncheck everything else.
  5. Now click the Clear now button.

Further information can be found in the Clear your cache, history and other personal information in Firefox article.

Do you have any ad block addon installed?

The Reset Firefox feature can fix many issues by restoring Firefox to its factory default state while saving your essential information. Note: This will cause you to lose any Extensions, Open websites, and some Preferences.

To Reset Firefox do the following:

  1. Go to Firefox > Help > Troubleshooting Information.
  2. Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
  3. Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
  4. Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.

Further information can be found in the Refresh Firefox - reset add-ons and settings article.

I opened Firefox in my Guest account, and it exhibited the same problem. I then Reset that Firefox, and that likewise didn't fix the problem. Are you saying you can't actually reproduce the problem, or are you just sending me basic articles?

MORE INFO: I'm an IT professional, and my system is clean and stable. The antivirus is Microsoft Security Essentials. I don't have AVG or Ghostery or any other 3rd party apps that block JavaScript.

As a next step, I backed up my profile, and then Reset Firefox. That did not solve the problem.

Next, I uninstalled Firefox, removed all traces, and then re-installed 17.0.1 with fresh profile. Testing website <http://www.salon.com/2012/12/18/obama_will_back_feinsteins_bill_to_reinstate_assault_weapons_ban/> I first got a failure, and then success when I reloaded the page with the reload icon. I continued to get inconsistent results, sometimes success, sometimes failure.

Next I clean installed 3.6.28, and found that it does work reliably.

So I worked forward: 4.0.1, 5.0.1, 6.0.2, 7.0.1, 8.0.1 all do work reliably. But starting with 9.0.1 (then 10.0.2, 11.0), it does not work reliably.

So something must have changed in Firefox between 8.0.1 and 9.0.1 that makes sharing on Salon.com not work reliably.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for the suggestion, but Safe Mode does not solve the problem.

The counts and the Register and Sign in buttons aren't working for me either, so it looks that some JavaScript isn't working in current Firefox versions.
