Problems I am Experiencing

  • I can't log-in to most sites (can't log-in to my bank or facebook, but can log-in to reddit)
  • I can't access some sites at all (like mozilla.com)
  • Firefox won't display any pop-ups
  • Can't install add-ons
  • when confronted with an incompatible site or link firefox does nothing - does not leave current page, does not display error, etc. There is a loading animation in the status bar, but then it says 'done' and nothing has happened.

My configuration across two different systems

  • firefox 3.5.16 on Windows XP Pro
  • firefox 3.6.13 on Mac OSX
  • javascript is enabled (move/resize, disable or replace context menus)
  • java is enabled
  • no proxy or firewall
  • block pop-ups is unchecked

I noticed this started on my XP system after I installed Safari, but I can't say for sure if this is causal. It has been going on on my Mac system for as long as I can remember. These systems are in two different locations on two different internet connections. The Mac system is wireless and the problem persists no matter what wireless connection I use.

Safari 4, IE8, IE7, and Opera (unknown version) have no trouble connecting to sites.

I really, really want and need to be able to use Firefox! Ironically I have to make this support ticket in Safari because my Firefox won't go to the mozilla page.

I was finally able to get a live help session, and found that restarting firefox in safe mode fixed all the problems. I don't know what all safe mode does, but one thing is disable your addons. I had no issues in safe mode (but obviously can't work in it as there are no add-ons), but when I exited and restarted firefox normally I still had no problems! Still don't know what was up, but whatever it was, it got straightened out.

Here's a link to firefox's safe mode: http://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/safe%20mode

Update: the safe mode fix only lasted for a little while (maybe a day or two?). All my issues with firefox are back, and are possibly getting worse. I just tried safe mode again, and this time when I restarted normally the issues haven't changed. I'll keep looking, and would love to know if anyone has fixed something similar.

Maybe it's an issue with handling redirects?

  • When I log in to the sites where nothing happens (I enter my log in details, press "login" and nothing happens) I can go to another page if I know the url, and will be logged in. Knowing this helps me circumvent the issue with some sites (like a Drupal installation for example), but many sites redirect you to a secure interior that I don't get redirected to and don't know urls for (like my bank).
  • When I save content in content management systems (click the "save" button) nothing happens (page does not change, no confirmation message), but my content or edits are actually saved when I go to the published page.
