read earlier messages on the same problem checked antivirus (System Mechanic) Safe mode start up rebuilt global database compacted and repaired folders nothing of these solved the problem

It still remains too slow to use. Whatever operation I do, delete a file, move it, send a message, it takes up to a minute to complete. A few times I saw a "busy script" message.

Win8.1, use POP3 and clear inbox always to keep messages on local folders. There are 15+ years worth of messages, so changing to another email program is not an option.

What is your anti-virus software?

System Mechanic has a built-in antivirus & malware function. Switching it on or off doesn't impact the behavior of Thunderbird.

just now I saw the error message about stopped script:

chrome://messenger/content/folderPane.js:2062

Thanks Christ1

This doesn't work for me as the local folders are on a USB3 flash disk - not available in WIN8 safe mode.

However, miraculously the problem is away now - no changes made to anything. This happened a few weeks ago too: when I was away from home, using a different internet connection, the problem started. Repair folders, compact folders, rebuilt index, but no effect. Then suddenly things were back to normal.

Not sure what now. Will wait until it happens again and then document better exactly what happened.

Do you know if perhaps System Mechanic updated?
