There is an extension named Tab Killer that lets you do this. The official source hasn't been updated for a while, so I posted an updated version. The background is in this thread: How do I completely disable tabs?
I don't enjoy going back in time this way, but if you do, then here's the link: http://jeffersonscher.com/res/github_tabkiller-2.0.2009110201-versbump.xpi (download, then drag onto an open window to install)
Please note: when you load this extension and restart Firefox, any inactive tabs in the windows before you restart vanish. So make sure you aren't leaving any pending work.
After installing, go here to default new tab to new window (otherwise it prompts you every time):
orange Firefox button (or Tools menu) > Add-ons > Extensions category
Click the Options button for Tab Killer (see attached image).

Note that you can Use Shift + left-click to open links in a new window.

not a bad tip but you there are still certain situations where it won't work, right click "search <<default search engine>> for "<<highlighted text>>"... but using the the search bar with shift clicking on the on the button worked...
didn't get a chance to look at those this time, but thanks anyways :)
but one last thing... why would tabless browsing be taken out of the core firefox application?
why would tabless browsing be taken out of the core firefox application?
One of the core value propositions of the Mozilla suite which preceded Firefox was support of tabbed browsing. People were switching from IE expressly to use that feature. So I don't think it makes sense to say anything was removed from the application. Instead, I would describe it as follows: whenever a built-in feature (such as that right-click search, displaying the Add-ons page, etc.) had the choice of creating a new window or a new tab, it creates a new tab.
