38.1.0 crashing accessing messages (user#1= unknown crash sig) (user# mozilla::layers::CompositorD3D11::EndFrame/dxgi.dll) CAUSE graphics hardware acceleration
Updating to version 38.1.0 Start Thunderbird, Starts up OK. Can view messages and write new emails etc OK. If I select "get messages" OR messages are accessed automatically every 5min. then the whole PC crashes. Three finger salute does not bring up task manager. Only way out is to power cycle.

Just read another similar problem. So I tried.. Disabling hardware acceleration at tools | optioins | advanced | general It now appears to work OK. Ie no crashes. I will monitor the problem. for a while.

Well done Butterfly Pete. It seems to be working - thank goodness!! D
I've had dozens and dozens of crashes after updating to 38.1. It's been driving me nuts. Thanks for this suggestion. I'll let you know how it goes.

bray_john, please post in a new topic and include your crash IDs. See https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter#w_viewing-crash-reports
butterfly, what are your crash IDs? see https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/mozilla-crash-reporter#w_viewing-crash-reports
And does updating your graphics driver allow you to reenable hardware acceleration?

Why would I post in a new topic when it's basically the same issue? I can say that I haven't had any crashes since applying the fix above.
Here are the Crash ID's I still have:

reply for Wayne Mery In troubleshooting, crashes, all I get is "No crash reports have been submitted."
Plus I haven't updated my graphics driver. I don't know if it needs updating, but since it all works OK. I'm leaving everything as is. Plus, it seems, to work faster now.
Hope it helps. Pete

It's faster how? And after having doing what to your system?
And does your screen go mostly white or mostly black before the crash?
I'm following this in case the problem comes back. Disabling hardware acceleration made it go away. However, my screen used to just freeze. The cursor could be moved for a while, but did nothing and then joined the freeze after a few impotent clicks!
Wayne, Thunderbird seems to run slightly faster. accessing emails and folders seem faster. Wayne, As I've said before. All ive done was...
Disabling hardware acceleration at tools | optioins | advanced | general
regards the screen black or white. I had exactly the same symptoms as DavidDG has just described.
