I am running WIN XP SP 3.0 V5.1.2600 32 bit on a desktop computer I got fed up with trying to read the words on the screen, & tried to make the font colour black instead of grey, also make words larger. What a disaster! Now sites, including Firefox, MY GOV and Facebook, are not showing any images, & looks all wrong. I tried to change it back, but because I did not write down what was there before, I cannot seem to change it back. I also tried System Restore, that didn't work either. How can I change these settings back to their default, please?. I do like my fonts to be 14, & I use Comic Sans as my default font....other than that, the main problem I am having is that I cannot read text any longer, as it all seems to be grey & not black on white....just look at this text now? Does it look black to you, or grey? Help! Sylvia

Note that you can always delete the prefs.js file in the Firefox profile folder to reset all prefs.

You can use this button to go to the currently used Firefox profile folder:

You can also check the about:config page for bold color and font prefs and possibly reset user set (bold) prefs via the right-click context menu to the default value.

  • Search: /^browser.*color|^font/

You can open the about:config page via the location/address bar. You can accept the warning and click "I'll be careful" to continue.

Make sure that you allow pages to choose their own fonts. Otherwise you will get a problem with website that use a font to display icons or small images.

  • Tools > Options > Content : Fonts & Colors > Advanced: [X] "Allow pages to choose their own fonts, instead of my selections above"

You can use the NoSquint extension to set font size (text/page zoom) and text color on web pages.

I have attached a screen shot of what I think are the default color settings. You access those using the "Colors" button on the Content panel of the Options dialog:

  • The default colors on the left side are Text: Black and Background: White
  • By default, the "Use system colors" checkbox is NOT checked
  • By default, only override page colors when using High Contrast themes (this refers to the Windows OS theme, not a Firefox theme)

Does that help?

Thanks both cor-el & jscher2000....dear cor-el, you should know by now that I am a complete novice when it comes to fixing things....what you led me to was just gobbledy-gook to me....but, it spurred me on to just go back to the settings & try & remember the fonts etc that were there before i changed them....then I tried it out on FB, & all but one little thing there is as it was before...thank goodness...with one exception, a good one, the font there is larger...so I can now read it all with ease, well, mostly. So I thank you both so much, sorry I'm such a dunce....to see Mozilla zine, well, it fills me with foreboding....lol....I did read it all, but none of it made any sense...sigh....Oh, to be young again so I could do a course in computer technology & programme writing....etc... Peace and Love to you both... Sylvia x
