I lost the all the toolbars and buttons. The whole top of the window is reset to defaults.
When i right-click and re-enable some toolbars (e.g. Web Developer, Google toolbar), it appears, but totally blank without any buttons. I also lost all the additional buttons I had added next to the adress-bar (e.g. Show page source, New tab, Page info. these buttons were added by the Toolbar Buttons extension).
Other extensions, including status-bar modifications, work fine. The session (open tabs) and bookmarks aren't lost either.
Any ideas, please?

Create a new profile as a test to check if your current profile is causing the problems.

If that new profile works then you can transfer some files from the old profile to that new profile (be careful not to copy corrupted files)

The file that stores details of toolbar customizations is probably corrupt. For details of how to fix this see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Toolbar+keeps+resetting
Thank you for your quick reply!
However, it still doesn't solve the issue. I've tried the safe-mode reset as well as deleting localstore.rdf manually (or replacing it with a backup). Firefox starts with toolbars set to default, but when I make customizations and restart the browser, no changes are remembered.
Strange thing is that the Web Developer toolbar and Google toolbar are shown, but contain no buttons. These aren't even contained in the right-click/customize dialog. I was using several extra buttons from Toolbar Buttons, now I can't even find them in that dialog.
When I started the same profile in Firefox 4 (after deleting localstore.rdf), the buttons appeared, as well as the wider selection in the customization dialog, so everything looked fine. However, I don't want to switch to FF4 yet due to extension incompatibility problems.

So I made several new profiles, used mozbackup to set it up, and finally blamed the Nice Translator extension, which caused all this trouble. No idea how this is possible, but now without the extension, everything has returned to normal.
Thanks for your support!!!
I've tried everything posted & still no toolbars show up. I can't use firefox anymore until another upgrade is posted. That is when I will try it again. If no toolbars happen again, then I will give-up forever. I've used firefox for many yrs and have never had a problem like this.
