The Java Runtime environment can be downloaded at cnet dot com and at other websites. It is necessary to install the Java Runtime Environment in order to play games provided in the Yahoo Games area. It worked fine until I upgraded; now it won't work. Not sure how to enable it, that is, if it is possible to simply enable it.

You do not appear to have Java installed.

  1. You can look in Add-ons > Plugins to see if you have something similar to Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U25 6.0.250.6 (the numerals may be different). If you do, click on it; if it shows a button "Enable", click on the "Enable" button. If you do not see Java(TM) Platform SE 6 U25 6.0.250.6, skip steps 2 and 3 below, then follow the instructions below to download and install Java.
  2. Then press the Windows logo key+R, the Run dialog box will open. Enter javacpl.cpl in the box and click OK. When the Java Control Panel opens, click the Advanced tab, click on the "+" to expand "Default Java for browsers" and be sure there is a check mark for "Mozilla Family". Then click the "+" to expand "Java Plug-in" and be sure there is a check mark next to "Enable the next-generation Java plug-in". Exit and restart Firefox.
  3. If you have the above Plugin, after you "Enable" it, then you can use the Java Test link at the bottom of these instructions to verify that it is being recognized and is working.

Install or Update the Java plugin to the latest version.

You need to update the following:

  • Adobe PDF Plug-In For Firefox and Netscape (you also have Foxit Reader; you do not need both)
  • Shockwave Flash 10.0 r32
  1. Check your plugin versions on either of the following links':
  2. Update Adobe Reader (PDF plugin):
    • From within your existing Adobe Reader (if you have it already installed):
      • Open the Adobe Reader program from your Programs list
      • Click Help > Check for Updates
      • Follow the prompts for updating
      • If this method works for you, skip the "Download complete installer" section below and proceed to "After the installation" below
    • Download complete installer (if you do NOT have Adobe Reader installed):
    • After the installation, start Firefox and check your version again.
  3. Update the Flash plugin to the latest version.
    • Download and SAVE to your Desktop so you can find the installer later
    • If you do not have the current version, click on the "Player Download Center" link on the "Download and information" or "Download Manual installers" below
    • After download is complete, exit Firefox
    • Click on the installer you just downloaded and install
      • Windows 7 and Vista: may need to right-click the installer and choose "Run as Administrator"
    • Start Firefox and check your version again or test the installation by going back to the download link below
    • Download and information: http://www.adobe.com/software/flash/about/
      • Use Firefox to go to the above site to update the Firefox plugin (will also install plugin for most other browsers; except IE)
      • Use IE to go to the above site to update the IE ActiveX
    • Download Manual installers.
