I am a student at Highline Community College here in Washington. The online tool that I interface with for classes from the college is called Angel. Email on Angel does not work with Firefox 7. The IT department is working on a fix currently, but until they get that done I need to know how to turn off the automatic updater that wants to install version 7. I'll switch to the newer version when the fix is completed.

Click Firefox button > Options > Options > Advanced > Update (Tools > Options > Advanced > Update if using the Menu Bar):

  • un-check "Firefox" at the top of the panel
  • you can also check "Ask me what I want to do"
  • exit Firefox (Firefox button > Exit OR File > Exit if using the Menu Bar), wait a few seconds (10-30), and restart Firefox. Check to see that the options are as you set them.
  • See --> Options window-Advanced panel

You can change those options back later.

You may still receive on-screen update notices, but the automatic updates/downloads should cease.

I would like to go back to my original v3 that had NO issues!

PDF's worked, eMail worked, everything worked!

But since the glorious Win Vista then Win 7 things have changed for the worse. Even Apple now has Intel Inside...

I finally found the automatic update switch and turned it OFF!

Damn menus have changed in the 'NEW' FireFox; some better others worse. But as with the 'NEW' Micro$oft products changing the menu so you can no longer use the APP seems to be the 'NEW'!

Ranting will not get you a solution to your problem.

You really should post a new question and give a few more details about the problems that you are having so that one of the volunteer users here can try to help you. Statements like "PDF's worked, eMail worked, everything worked" do not give us information about the problems that you are currently experiencing to offer a solution. In addition, when you post a new question,

  • in the first block "Ask" give a one sentence question like, "With Firefox 7 where are the menus and why do I have problems with PDFs and my e-mail?"
  • the details of the problems should be in the "Details" input area; this is where to be more specific and give examples of the problems with links to sites if necessary
  • include a list of the Troubleshooting Information (Help > Troubleshooting Information, click "Copy all to clipboard" and then paste that into your question in the "Troubleshooting Information" input block)
  • look at the information to be included in last item "We've made some educated guesses about your current browser and operating system. Show details »", but do not change anything there; if there is a glaring error about your OS, Firefox version or one of your plugins, explain that in the "Details" section.

Menu Bar or Firefox button
You still have the option of using the Menu Bar over the Firefox button menus if you choose, and you can switch back and forth between the two depending on whether "Menu Bar" is checked or un-checked (checked=display Menu Bar; un-checked=display Firefox button). How to do that?
