I use Windows XP home with latest upgrades.

I have latest version of Firefox on this computer.

on the address bar, when I click on the down-arrow on the right side of the bar, I have a list of about 12 addresses that appear. of these, at least 5 are no longer usable, due to expiration dates, changes at the website addressed and so on.

There doesn't seem to be any reason for these addresses to be on the bar, since I haven't used them in several months, and have accessed other sites multiple times per day.

You can move the mouse over the row without selecting and use the "Del" key and you can use the arrow keys to move up/down and the "Del" key.

Mac users may have to use "Shift+Del" to accomplish this.

But if you have a lot of 404 or other things you want to eliminate then do it through the History sidebar ("Ctrl+H") or the History Library List ("Ctrl+Shift+H"). Using a Search. Special techniques for selecting in sidebar without invoking, click to the LEFT of the favicon.

Bookmarked items will not be removed, as you are only deleting history.

You may sometimes want to restrict your AwesomeBar "string" searching to

* bookmarks, ^ history, + tabs, # title, @ url, ~ tabs,. % tabs
then see Location Bar search (internal - Auto Complete)

You could get better use from the AwesomeBar with a couple of extensions:
