I am setting up Thunderbird on my new computer with Windows 10. Have always used Thunderbird and knew that there was no encryption. Now that this warning comes up saying Thunderbird can allow you to get mail using the provided configurations, however you should contact email provided. I did contact them and they said, "we cannot comment since we don't support Thunderbird". Not sure if I should continue .

Who is the account provider (the part after @ in the address), and is the account POP or IMAP?

more options

nbnet.nb.ca I believe it is a POP account.

more options

Since they don't provide secure connections, the recommended settings are:

incoming POP server: pop.bellaliant.net on port 110, connection security = none, authentication = password, transmitted insecurely, User Name = email address

outgoing SMTP server: smtpa.bellaliant.net on port 2225, connection security = none, authentication = password, transmitted insecurely, User Name = email address

The disadvantage of non-secure accounts is they usually don't work unless you're connected to the provider's network. In this case, that may be sufficient if your cell provider is Bell and you always connect to Bell networks, either at home or via wifi elsewhere.

Thanks for this information; much appreciated. I gathered from Thunderbird that perhaps such non-secure accounts would be a poor choice, and put your passwords at risk. Why would Bell not attend to this I wonder?

more options

ISPs are often somewhat behind the times regarding email, and they prefer you access accounts through webmail. Bell does offer secure settings for some customers. I don't know if those servers would work with an nbnet address.

I have set up Thunderbird with the recommended settings by sfhowes. All incoming mail works but it won't send messages out.

I should add that I have two accounts, and one sends messages out, but the other using this below, does not.

Thunderbird did ask for a password and I don't know what password that means. I did enter the one for my email provided but doubt that was what was needed. Here is the error message I just received on my last try to send a message:

Sending of the message failed. Failed due to unexpected error 80004005. No description is available. The message could not be sent using Outgoing server (SMTP) smtpa.bellaliant.net for an unknown reason. Please verify that your Outgoing server (SMTP) settings are correct and try again.

I solved this by telling this account to use the default server for outgoing, and made the other account the default. Sorry to bother you again.
