I'm on OS 10.10.2, and despite routinely updating Firefox, I'm now getting an 'update to 37.0.1' several times a day. I have run the update process several times, but it's obviously not taking - browser version remains 36.0.1.

Now the 37.0.2 update is released, the update process still isn't working - despite downloading, running the update and relaunching, Firefox 36.0.1 remains stubbornly in place.

If there are problems with updating or with the permissions then best is to download the full version and trash the currently installed version to do a clean install of the new version.

Download a new copy of the Firefox application and save the disk image file to the desktop

I eventually figured this out myself - but thanks for the hint.
