Hi,

My Thunderbird is running very slow. I think it is partly because I have too many emails in folders. I would like to back up my emails and addresses and start 2015 with a clean thunderbird.

How can I backup my emails and addresses onto an external hard drive? How can I access them later if I need to read any of them?

many thanks for your help.

There is an add-on to TB which allows import and export of emails in various formats to a separate storage medium (external disk, thumb drive, etc.).

The instructions on how to download and install it can be found at http://barryduggan.info/exportMail.php

To export an individual address book, try these steps: From TB, click on 'Address Book' (or 3-bar menu -> Tools -> Address Book). In the list of address books in the left pane, click on the one you want to export. From the menu bar, select Tools -> Export. An new window 'Export Address Book' will open. Enter the file name and navigate to the folder where you want to store it. Click on 'Save'. This will export only the selected address book.

I use another solution. Its from a small firm in Italy called Hekasoft, and their software is called Hekasoft Backup and Restore (freeware @ Hekasoft.com). Its very much a work in progress - I do Beta testing for them - but it is fully functional. Besides the pre-defined software that it backs up, it also allows for personal, custom modules to be created.

I use it to back up my emails and web browser , and been glad for the backup when something went wrong; a few minutes later and all was fully restored.
