why do some sites show up very small and unreadable?

You may need to install an extension to have the Add-ons bar visible if you use NoSquint.

Try to reset the percentage of the view by pressing Ctrl + 0
You may have zoomed the page(s) by accident.
Reset the page zoom on pages that cause problems.
- View > Zoom > Reset (Ctrl/Command+0 (zero))
