I use Time Warner Cable (TWC) and Thunderbird, (24.4.0) running in OS X 10.9.2 on a macbook air
Until about 1:45 east coast US time today, I could send and receive on my two accounts in Thunderbird, which all worked fine for the last 2 1/2 years. I can still send and receive email just fine using their web client. I can receive in receive in Thunderbird now, but can't send. The send failure started with one account and is now affecting both.

After over an hour with TWC we have confirmed that my SMTP settings are correct from TWC's view as follows
smtp server = mail.twc.com Port = 587 authentication method = Password, transmitted insecurely.
However I now get the following:
Every time I try to send I get the following:
Sending of message failed. The message could not be sent using SMTP server mail.twc.com for an unknown reason. Please verify that your SMTP server settings are correct and try again, or contact your network administrator.

I did indeed. There was no outage. In a fourth phone call, after reviewing my setting and resting them to what they were before the first tech had me change them, it began working again. What is odd is that the settings which work now are the ones that worked yesterday but stopped at about 1:45 today. TWC says it's a Thunderbird issue, but the settings didn't work in a few other email clients. It's working now, and all's well with the gift horse's mouth.
