I went to a site that has malware that completely blocked Firefox and tried to hold me for ransom (Pay via PayPal). Don't know why Norton didn't block them, but it didn't and it seems the malware might have shut off Norton (I'm running another program now to search for malware). I had to use Task Manager to quit Firefox. I uninstalled Firefox. I reinstalled it, but it takes me back to that website leaving me in the same boat. SO, how do I stop Firefox from going to the last site I was on after install?

You can delete your Firefox profile, which will remove any currently open sites from your history (Profile Manager - Create, remove or switch Firefox profiles). Note this will cause you to lose all your bookmarks, passwords, etc.

You should scan for malware with multiples scanners, Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware before doing this.

While helpful, this solution requires me to have Firefox installed on my computer...which I had uninstalled to preclude the malware. The malware scan(s) did find some malware and eliminated it, but if I reinstall Firefox, it will appear again. Can you point me in the direction of where profiles are stored on my Windows 8.1 computer (and what it is called)? I did search for all files that had firefox in their character string and eliminated them, but (as we all know) programmers tend to name things "their own way".

The malware is not a part of Firefox, did you run a scan with malwarebytes? I'd suggest running that, and then installing Firefox again.

Have you tried Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and HitmanPro (in their free releases) ? They helped me a lot of times in similar malware/ransomware issues.

I did actually use that to remove the malware. I also found the profile files for firefox on my computer and eliminated all of the ones that had today's date. I tried to reinstall Firefox, but it stopped installing when it got to the "import wizard" and I had to use Task Manager to stop the installation. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to live with IE.

This add-on can stop such pages; disallow Script Button {web link} The Disallow Script button looks like a letter "M" and the title is the Minus Script, drag and drop the button on a toolbar. If the button is not displayed then nothing operates, except rules for plugins.

There should be nothing in your profile to worry about. Except for the History Manager having that link. Do not worry. If you land on such a page again, use the add-on.

Another thing. Before the add-on, I landed on such a page (lots of fun . . . . NOT !). But I discovered a way out. When I tried starting the browser, the page came back. I closed the browser and thought for a minute. Had an idea. With the browser closed, I right click on the icon, and selected Open New Window. It worked, the page was gone. :-)
