I received a screen message that a Firefox5 update was available and was advised to install it. I did. As part of the installation process a message was posted indicating that the update was not compatible with my Google toolbar. I don't know why, because I have been using Google and Firefox compatibly for some time.

You can force 5.0 "compatibility" with the "Compatibility Reporter" extension, or with extensions.checkCompatibility using about:config. Use at your own risk

Ed Muller ("the-edmeister") installed the Google Toolbar because of so many complaints (/questions) to see it that would work, and reported that it worked as well as those with the problem.

'I found that Google Toolbar does indeed work, but McAfee Site Advisor does not. It would be nice if the update would tell you what's not compatible BEFORE installing itself.'

It is absolutely nuts that I updated to 5.0 and now I'm missing my Google Toolbar and most importantly SPELLCHECK! I never would have updated had I know of this problem. Talk about an essential tool. Come on Firefox! I'll be using another browser until you can get this problem fixed!

question on spell checking, added

The Google Toolbar problem has already been answered above by installing an extension. If the Spell Checker was an extension the same solution would almost certainly work, there is very little difference between Fx4 and Fx5.

Firefox has its own Spelling Checker which you can use without installing an extension. In fact you can even spell check web pages.

More information on configuration variables available in about:config (entries) and for users not familiar with the process there is about:config (How to change) -- Specialized list of only Tabs configuration variables.

This is a support group with help provided by volunteers, it is not a give answers a low score because then Mozilla will fix it in the current version -- it won't happen. If you are interested in solutions then use the solutions, or provide feedback why an offered solution does not work, or what you need help with to use the solution. Most solutions will work, it may take a little more time to understand or use a solution but there is lots of help for that as well.

The only person who can mark a problem as solved is the original poster.
