Firefox is not letting me add any bookmarks, no matter what method I use. I recently installed the Private Bookmarks add-on (addons.mozilla.org/en-GB/firefox/addon/webext-private-bookmarks ), there may or may not be a link there.

EDIT: It doesn't even let me change the URL of an existing bookmark if I right-click on it > Properties > [change Location] > Save.

Steps taken so far: 1) Disabled the add-on. 2) Restarted Firefox. 3) Removed the add-on. 4) Dragging the tab to bookmarks toolbar; clicking the star on the address bar; cmd+D; bookmarks > bookmark this page. None work. 5) Deleted some bookmarks (in case there was some sort of limit).

I massively rely on bookmarks so this problem would completely destroy my browser experience. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!

Firefox 69.0.3. Mac OS X 10.11.4 El Capitan.

If you use Sync then best is to disconnect Sync temporarily during troubleshooting.

You can check for problems with the places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder.

  • use "Verify Integrity" button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page

In case errors are reported with "Verify Integrity" close and restart Firefox and retry.

If "Verify Integrity" cannot repair places.sqlite, rename/remove all places.sqlite and favicons.sqlite files in the Firefox profile folder. Firefox will rebuild places.sqlite and restore the bookmarks from a recent JSON backup in the bookmarkbackups folder.

  • keep a backup copy of places.sqlite in case a new places.sqlite database has to be created

You can use the button on the "Help -> Troubleshooting Information" (about:support) page to go to the current Firefox profile folder or use the about:profiles page.

Thank you @cor-el, that seems to have worked :)

I still cannot tell whether the add-on that I had installed corrupted anything, perhaps I will wait until it is out of early release before I install it again.

For reference, for anybody with a similar problem reading this, what I did was: [1] I exported my bookmarks to HTML (Bookmarks > Show all bookmarks > Up-down arrow icon > Export...) and I backed up my bookmarks (Bookmarks > Show all bookmarks > Up-down arrow icon > Backup...). [2] Then, I went to about:profiles > Root directory > Show in Finder, and made a copy of places.sqlite. [3] Then, I went to about:support and clicked the Verify Integrity button, which came up with "Unable to fix corruption, places.sqlite will be replaced on next startup". [4] Then, I quit Firefox and opened it again.

Best do [1] and [2] as a precaution.
