is there anything that could cause firefox to 1) display a reddish hue as the screen's background color and 2) disable application level controls (ie selectors)

While

 Running Windows 10
 Running Avast free home version
 Running Firefox with Noscript
 Visiting DuckDuckGo.com.

i could control the browser to switch sites, but could not select the controls under the DuckDuckGo Settings box

The Google browser was unaffected during the same period.

In your question, you asked:

I'm not sure whether you mean within the Firefox application window, or more generally? Usually Firefox adopts the typical system coloration unless you have profiled your monitor -- mostly an issue for professional or advanced amateur photographers. In that case, Firefox may try to color correct using the profile, which can lead to some odd results. But it still should only affect the Firefox window.

I am attaching a screenshot of the two rows of controls I see under the DDG search box on the results page. Are you having a problem with the first row or the second row, or both? If you don't see either row, could you check the NoScript icon/menu to make sure duckduckgo.com is allowed to run scripts? Otherwise, the site redirects you to a simplified page with fewer features (lower part of screenshot).

Thanks Jscher. As I never seen this condition before and no other application had the symptoms I was wondering if I was being hack at the firefox port by something like the Caterpillar software that I read about on wikileaks. Only affected firefox.

Maybe also check the monitor cabling if you have a problem with your monitor in general.
