I am trying to download Thunderbird and am having no luck. The download starts, but it goes very slow. After several minutes it seems to get stuck around 2%. Then it slowly moves on to 4%. I left it for an hour and it did not move from there. Any other download that same size (28 MB) happens almost instantaneously. I tried different browsers, different PCs, turned off antivirus (Windows Defender), emptied the browser cache, and checked my system specifications. The same thing still happens. The one computer I tried is a Compaq Windows 8 with 2 GB RAM and 1 GHz processor. The other is a Dell Windows 7 with 4 GB RAM and 2.6 GHz processor. Both are x64. Anybody else experiencing this issue or know how to solve it? Is it a server issue or something wrong on my end? Thanks.

My guess is anti virus at your end.

Try the download in windows safe mode with networking and see if it goes faster. All Mozilla connections use HTTPS or FTP most anti virus programs have a problem with secure connections. As security programs they do not cope very well with increased security around them.

For instructions on how to start in safe mode: Windows 8

Trying this out. The link to starting Windows 8 in safe mode did not work.

That works on my machine, looks like Microsoft have decided the URL required the word including.

Tried the download again in safe mode on the Windows 8 machine. It went faster but still froze--this time after 45 minutes at 10 of 28 MB. I may try it on the faster Windows 7 machine to see if it makes any difference . . .

This is just a try it.

in the search box type %tmp% and press enter. Delete the contents of the TEMP folder that opens. some will be in use and not delete, but if the folder is full of junk it could be a factor.

Thanks for all the help but I'm still having no success. I was initially confused about your "try it" of deleting the TEMP folder contents. I was using the address/search box of the browser so it did not do anything, but when I used the Windows search box I reached the TEMP folder and it was full of junk that I deleted (about 200 MB). However the download is still not finishing. I restarted in Safe Mode with Networking again, re-emptied the browser cache, and tried the download multiple times. It goes at a different rate every time, always slow. The fastest it ever went was about 1 MB/min, but it froze at 13 MB. I am about ready to give up. The only other thing I can think of is trying a different internet connection, but I am not an IT professional so what do I know. How can it be so difficult to download a 28 MB file? Would someone be willing to put it on Google Drive and give me a link? Thanks.

Many thanks, Matt. I know the Google Drive route is more of a circumvention than a solution, and that you maybe did not feel completely comfortable going that way, but it enabled me to successfully download and install Thunderbird. I really appreciate it! Thanks for all the time and effort you put into helping me with this problem!
