Reading some sites, the site attempts to run something from adsafeprotect.com . The script supplied by that site apparently doesn't work in Firefox. This makes Firefox nearly unusable. I don't think that this is a Firefox problem as such, but I can't figure out a work-around.

adsafeprotected.com is utilized by HTTPS Everywhere (https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere). This differs slightly from the domain listed above (adsafeprotect.com). The HTTPS Everywhere project maintains a list of rewrite rules (https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere/atlas/domains/adsafeprotected.com.html). Specific rewrite rules can be found at https://www.eff.org/https-everywhere/atlas/index.html. Some Ad networks also utilize the rewrite rules in order to initiate secure connections. The problem is most likely related to an Ad Network. In order to troubleshoot further, we will need to know who is requesting adsafeprotected.com. This can be found using an HTTP debugger such as FireBug or Charles Web Debugging Proxy.
