How to stop the impending installation of 8.0.1 upon FF restart?
I clicked on the install link for FF 8.0.1 on the Mozilla website. I thought it would download an executable file that I could use when I was ready. Instead it started the install process, and is now waiting for me to restart FF to complete the install of 8.0.1. I'm running FF 3.6.24 and I DO not want to install a newer version at this time. I haven't restarted FF and want to know how to eliminate FF 8.0.1 from finishing the install.

I am not certain about this so try it at your own risk.
(Low risk: It either will stop the update or it will not, and it is possible to reinstall Firefox 3.6.24 without data loss if necessary)
Rename the Files update.mar and updates.xml to something like update.mar.old and updates.xml.old
File path on Windows XP something like C:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\updates
- your file path may well differ, different OS, and I have custom installs
- see also http://kb.mozillazine.org/Software_Update
edit - the above method does at least work stopping a point update. I have just tried it, but have not tried stopping an upgrade from 3.6 to 7
