Thunderbird responses to read message or click tab very slow. SOLVED Closed many applications, deleted old mails. Now it look OK again.
My computer is a core i5 with sufficient memory. I use thunderbird for several mailboxes and use it with pop3. So I download the messages to my local computer. When I select another message to read of another tab or delete a message. It often take a few seconds before something happens. What can be de reason for this slowness?

the last weeks it was OK. But this week it started to become slow again. I noticed in the taskmanager that the memory usage was quite high (not extreme). There were a lot of open applications. So I closed a lot and also cleaned a lot of old mails and restarted windows. Now it look OK again.

I have lightning enabled. It makes no difference when I disable it. I also disabled the other addons.
When I switch between different mail to be displayed with 75% it goes fast without noticing that it takes time. But it often takes 3 seconds to switch to displaying another mail.
What is your anti-virus software?
Avira
Try to start Windows in safe mode with networking enabled. - Win10 https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/help/12376/windows-10-start-your-pc-in-safe-mode
Still in Windows safe mode, start Thunderbird in safe mode. - https://support.mozilla.org/kb/safe-mode
Does the problem go away?
It is a bit difficult to say. It is not immidiately slow after startup. It becomes slow. I will first see what happens when I disable Avira when it is slow and it if it speeds up then. Thanks for the suggestions.

Disabling anti-virus entirely is a bad idea. Below are some generic recommendations wrt anti-virus s/w.
Create an exception in your anti-virus software for the Thunderbird profile folder, so that the anti-virus real-time scanner will not scan it. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Thunderbird
Don't let your anti-virus software scan incoming and outgoing messages.
Don't let your anti-virus software scan attachments.
Don't let your anti-virus software intercept your secure connection to the server.
Remove any add-ons your anti-virus software may have installed in Thunderbird.
Keep it working. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Keep_it_working_-_Thunderbird
And last but not least, backup your Thunderbird profile on a regular basis. https://support.mozilla.org/kb/profiles-where-thunderbird-stores-user-data#w_backing-up-a-profile

What is "sufficient memory" on your i5?
Hello Wayne, thanks for your time and attention. I have 8G and at this moment 5.3 in use. Now Thunderbird is working normal. I started some extra applications (3D design) and then the usage increases to 5.G and Thunderbird is still working normal. CPU usage is about 10%. The problem is not always there. I will follow your suggestions when it is back again (and I have time ;-)
