I need to make Firefox open the actual Windows Media Player application (not a plugin, the actual app window) when clicking on video links, e.g., WMV. These file types are already associated in Windows Explorer with WMPlayer, but this has no effect on Firefox.

What happens right now is that after clicking a video, I get a black screen with the yellow VLC Player icon (VideoLAN VLC is installed on my PC) in the center and no video. I do NOT want to launch VLC or any internal plugins.

You can change what type of application opens for each kind of type in Firefox's options.

  • new-fx-menu-button > Options > Applications > (example) SWF File > Select whatever is on the right side (e.g. Use ShockWave Flash for Firefox > Set Use other, find Windows Media Player
