If you double-click on the star it works as it always did, as far as i can see.
As does, right click>Bookmark this page.
Amendment I've made so many changes that I probably don't have the default set-up in this regard. I certainly don't have the blue star I've seen references to.

You can find the Find button in the "3-bar" Firefox menu button drop-down list and drag it on a toolbar for even easies access.
- Firefox menu button > Customize > Show/Hide Toolbars > Toolbar Layout
- View > Toolbars > Customize
In current Firefox releases (29 and later), that have have the Australis user interface, the orange Firefox menu button has been replaced by the three-bar Firefox Menu button at the far right end of the Navigation Toolbar and this button is always visible, whether you have the menu bar visible or hidden
A consequence of this location is that you no longer can hide the Navigation Toolbar
- There is a star like button next to the search bar on the Navigation Toolbar to bookmark the current web page and a "Show your bookmarks" button next to it to open the Bookmarks in a drop down menu.
You can find "Show All Bookmarks" to open the Bookmarks Manager (Library) at the bottom of this drop-down list - If you bookmark a page then "Bookmark This Page" in the Bookmarks menu changes to "Edit This Bookmark"
- You can make the the title bar visible via the "Title Bar" button at the bottom left in the Customize palette window
It is still possible to have the menu bar visible via the right-click context menu of a toolbar to have menus like the File menu with Print (Ctrl+P) and Print Preview and the Bookmarks menu available and the Edit menu with Find.

Another way to enable/disable the classic menu bar is to right-click a blank area of the tab bar (or the "+" button on the tab bar).
If you were accustomed to using the orange Firefox button, you've probably noticed its replacement, the "3-bar" menu button on the right end of the main navigation toolbar. I made some maps showing where things moved between the two. http://jeffersonscher.com/res/menu/comp.php
You can still press the <Alt> or <F10> key to bring up the tool bar.
Still cannot save directly to the bookmarks toolbar, have to save with the stupid blue star, then find it then move it. I HATE IT I HATE IT I HATE IT
You can drag a tab or the "Site Identity Button" (globe/padlock) on the Bookmarks Toolbar if you want to create a bookmark on the toolbar.
